5.  Report from the chair

 The ARLIS/NA Canada Chapter Meeting was held at the ARLIS/NA 37th Annual Conference, Indianapolis, IN, April19, 2009.  Six Canadian members attended; most were from the NW chapter with the exception of Jonathan Franklin and Liv Valmstead. Reports were given by Paula Farrar, ARLIS/NA Northwest and Jonathan Franklin, ARLIS/NA (MOQ). Kenlyn Collins, Prairie Regional Rep, submitted a written report.

ARLIS/NA Canada Chapter Activities Summary
ARLIS/NA Board activities reported included:

• ARLIS/NA Ontario chapter continued to prepare for their hosting of the 2012 Annual conference.
• Canadian representation on the ARLIS/NA International Relations Committee and ARLIS/NA Public Policy Committee. Marilyn Nasserdam will work on the Public Policy Committee.
• The tri-lingual brochure is still under development. Money was budgeted for it at the Executive Board Mid-year meeting first in 2008 and again in 2009. The deadline for completion was Jan. 31, 2010. The brochure should be completed for Boston, April 2010. Marie-Josée Arcand was paid to translate the English into French. Marilyn stated that it is important to post before the Toronto conference.
•The management firm TEI, is now hosting several committees and chapter web sites including IRC and ARLIS/NA Northwest Chapter.
• Received approval for complementary membership for Canadian member who is responsible for translating documents into French. This will be Jonathan Franklin.


6.  Local chapter reports

Montréal/Ottawa/Québec Chapter – Brian Mekis

There are 45 members in the chapter. The Spring meeting was held in Ottawa on June 2, 2009 at the National Capital Commission; the business meeting was held at the National Gallery of Canada Library. It has been decided to increase the Michele Gauthier Travel award from $800 to $1000. The chapter will be offering travel subsidies to attend chapter meetings.

The Fall meeting was held in Montreal at the Heffel Fine Art Auction House. The business meeting was held at the Canadian Centre for Architecture; a tour of the exhibition “Speed Limits”.

Philip Dombowsky stepped down as Editor of MOQDOC. Janet Rothney received the Special Travel Award for 2009, and Jennifer Garland, McGill University received the Michele Gauthier travel Award for 2010.

Ontario Chapter – Margaret English

The Spring meeting was held at the ROM on April 24th. The meeting was hosted by
 Arthur Smith, Head, Main Library and Archives and Jack Howard, Librarian, H.H. Mu Far Eastern Library at the ROM. A presentation on conservation was given by Heidi Sobol, and Arthur Smith spoke about collection development.

The Fall meeting was held at Margaret English’s home on November 6h. Stephanie Frontz of the New York west chapter attended the meeting to discuss the ARLIS/NA Conference in Toronto 2012. The meeting continued with a visit to David Mirvish’s warehouse in Leslieville.

The ARLIS/NA Conference in Toronto will be held from March 28 to April 5th, 2012. Local arrangement co-chairs are Karen McKenzie and Margaret English. Local development co-ordinator is Jill Patrick. Volunteers for Special Events are needed.

Other issues included the question of fundraising for the chapter. ARLIS/Ontario sent $100 for the Welcome Party in Boston.



Northwest – Paula Farrar

There are currently 18 members and four affiliates. Adrienne Lai was  the winner of the 2009 ARLIS/NA Internship award.

The Fall meeting took place online on Tuesday, November 17th and was organized and hosted by Paula Farrar, using the University of British Columbia’s license to Wimba Classroom.  Although only nine people attended the meeting, there was representation from Washington, British Columbia, Alberta and even Manitoba with Liv Valmestad, ARLIS/NA Canadian Representative, in attendance. A joint chapters meeting (Northwest, Ontario, Montréal-Ottawa-Québec) to visit the new facilities opening at both the Banff Centre and the University of Calgary's new fine arts facility were discussed. Potential dates are being explored


7.  Regional representative reports


Prairie Region / Région des prairies – Kenlyn Collins

The Clara Lander Library at the Winnipege art Gallery has received a large donation of books related to the museum’s porcelain collection. There is a digitization project of the Lander papers, image scanning, and the Pflug Archives have been given to the library/

9. Melva J. Dwyer Award

2009/10 Melva J. Dwyer Award Winner: A Bauhausler in Canada: Andor Weininger in the ‘50s by Dr. Oliver Botar.

Honourable mention to : Historical Canadian Women Artists: A Bio-bibliographic Database located on the Canadian Women Artists History Initiative (CWAHI) website at  HYPERLINK "http://cwahi.concordia.ca/" http://cwahi.c HYPERLINK "http://cwahi.concordia.ca/" oncordia.ca/ , 2007 co-authored by Melinda Reinhart, Concordia U.

The award was administered by Liv Valmestad, Chair of ARLIS/NA Canada, and the jury who consisted of:

Liv Valmstead thanked everyone on the jury.

Liv distributed the call for nominations widely.

Call for nominations was sent out to arlis-l, carlis-l, and the MOQ, Ontario and Northwest Chapter lists as well as to 17 Canadian publishers listed on the Canadian publishers webpage:  HYPERLINK "http://www.publishers.ca/membership-search.htm" http://www.publishers.ca/membership-search.htm who appeared to publish some art and/or architecture books.  One can search by the subject Art/Architecture and Education/Scholarly. Publishers contacted included : Arsenal Pulp Press, Banff Centre Press, Creative Book Publishing, Douglas & McIntyre, The Dundurn Group, Goose Lane Editions, The Heliconia Press, The Porcupine’s Quill, McGill-Queen’s University Press, Pacific Educational Press, P.D. Meany Publishers, University of Alberta Press, University of British Columbia Press, University of Calgary Press, University of Manitoba Press, University of Ottawa Press, and University of Toronto Press.

Liv was happy to report that several ARLIS/NA Canada members submitted
nominations.

For the 2009/10 award there were 9 nominations representing the following presses:
U of T, Robert McLaughlin Gallery, U of Ottawa, McGill-Queen’s U Press,  and Douglas & McIntyre.

Liv or James will announce winner in Quill and Quire and other sources, as there is a marketing budget for this.

The jury members for the 2010/11 award will be appointed by James Rout in the fall,
unless we want to do it now?

10. Canadian Representative and ARLIS/NA Canada roles

Liv participated in 13 executive board meetings via conference call and many e-mail discussions, fielded Canadian concerns where appropriate, and continued to work on the language barrier issue in the hopes of accommodating and increasing our Francophone and Spanish –speaking members.  I received approval for ARLIS/NA to prepare a tri-lingual membership brochure, and to give the new web site a French and Spanish presence. International Relations Committee Activities
Kristin Regina, Chair

As the Board Liaison, Kristin facilitated the communication between the IRC and the Board.  Attended the IRC meeting in Indianapolis and contributed to e-mail discussions throughout the year.   She helped to determine future location for study trips, worked on application form for study trip to Germany and marketed the new Kress Foundation Travel Award to ARLIS/Norden.

In October 2009 the IRC implemented its second Study Trip to Germany (see the trip report below).

The chair appointed a Task Force to plan and implement the 2010 Study Trip to the United Kingdom. The Task Force members are: Elizabeth Berenz (leader), Ian MacDermott, Amy Ballmer, Debbie Kempe, Kristen Regina. The trip will take place July 19-23, 2010 and be focused in London. It will occur the week after the annual ARLIS/UK & Ireland conference in Edinburgh.

The chair finally found a Mexican representative, Carla Ellard, for the committee who will begin service in 2010-2011.

The IRC awarded its first Samuel H. Kress European Travel Award to Holly Hatheway. She will present a paper and lead a discussion at the ARLIS/UK & Ireland conference in July.

Over forty renewing members of ARLIS/NA expressed an interest in joining/working with the IRC. I invited all of them to attend a brainstorming meeting in Boston and hope that many of them will agree to be appointed to Task Forces to implement any ideas that are generated.
 
Public Policy Committee Activities
Marc Gartler, Chair.

Marc was the Board Liaison together with the past president, Ken Soehner, and  participated in e-mail committee discussions.  Attended the Public Policy Committee meeting in Indianapolis.   Issues: name changed to:  Recruited Marilyn Nasserdam to be the Canadian representative on the committee.

11. ARLIS/NA Canada Web Site Report (James Rout)

The web site has been update by James; social software function have been incorporated. James indicated that everyone is welcome to post information, and he encouraged members to subscribe to the web site.

12. Funding of Canadian Rep. To the Executive Board

The Ontario Chapter discussed the possibility of providing financial support to Canadian. Rep. MOQ has now given $200 and Ontario wants to discuss this.

13. Other business
On behalf of the Executive Board, Liv expressed her thanks to  the Ontario chapter for contributing to the welcome party in Boston.
