Sobey Art Award finalists unveiled

Six young contemporary artists have earned a spot on the short list for the prestigious $50,000 Sobey Art Award. They include: Brendan Lee Satish Tang, Daniel Barrow, Brendan Fernandes, Patrick Bernatchez, Emily Vey Duke (of Halifax) and Cooper Battersby (of Penticton, B.C.). CBC News, June 15, 2010

 

Halifax native in running for Sobey award

A Halifax-born artist Emily Vey Duke, and her collaborative partner, Cooper Battersby, are on the shortlist representing the Atlantic region for the 2010 Sobey Art Award of $50,000.  On the 2010 Sobey Art Award jury are: Grant Arnold, curator, Vancouver Art Gallery; Jen Budney, associate curator, Mendel Art Gallery; Philip Monk, director, Art Gallery of York University; Lesley Johnstone, curator, Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal; and David Diviney, curator, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia. Four Seasons Seeks Red's Fake Rothko Art, Strikes Out

"Marc Glimcher, president of the Pace Gallery, which represents the [Rothko] estate ... said he saw the Four Seasons' idea as bad art karma. 'I think you're getting way too close to the edge of something weird, where an almost-completed-but-fake painting is hung in the place where the artist decided he was not going to let the real painting hang.'" American Gothic To Become French Toast?

 This weekend, artists from an Indiana gallery "plan to re-create Grant Wood's American Gothic painting using day-old bread. … [They will] create a mosaic by attaching nearly 4,000 pieces of crusty bread to a plywood grid.
